In the past few years, there have been many strives to combat the use of the word “gay” as a pejorative. As illustrated by this info-graphic unless a person is referring to a homosexual relationship or a place, thing or event related to the LGBTQ community, the word “gay” should not be used. Emory’s Word’s Matter campaign is an example of an effort being made to help people rethink their language. Hearing a slur that applies to oneself can have a detrimental impact on confidence and self image.
